A Lil’ Sugar A lot of Salt, the forthcoming, 14 song album from Boston based singer/songwriter, Mike Press is set for release on June 10th, 2024. (With singles dropping April 15th and May 13th.)
Produced by, 2 time Grammy Winner, Guitar Phenomenon/Producer, Paul Nelson and Mike Press the 14 song recording was Mixed and Mastered by Dave Westner, (Wolly Mammoth) and features some New Englands finest musicians, such as Dana Colley (Morphine), Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T), Brooks Millgate (Session Keyboardist), Lars Chappelle (Paul Nelson Band) and Nelson himself on a stunning array of songs that some how effectively mix, Indie Rock, Classic Rock, 80’s Vibes, and even some adult contemporary Smooth Jazz, Alt Country and Blues. It’s as if Eddy Van Halen teamed up with a songwriter like Paul Westerberg or Elliot Smith and harkens back to the head-scratcher team of Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy where you get tones melding together to create a familiar but new sound. The eclectic album brings new meaning to the, “death of genre” sounds that the internet, the DAW, playlists and streaming have made possible to artists, who are now free to create without some A&R executive breathing down their neck.
Press got his start as the drummer for the grunge/reggae Boston legends, Seven League Boots (Soul-Side’s Bobby Sullivan/Bow Thayer). Upon the demise of SLB, Press quickly jumped on the drum throne for NYC’s art/noise band Drunken Boat (First Warning Records), touring with the Violent Femmes, Harvey Milk, Patty Smith and more…. In the early 2000’s Mike Press formed the rock and roll band Sticky, featuring Jonas Kahn, Steve Mayone and Jeremy Moses Curtis. Sticky was a straight up rock and roll band that released two albums (Nooner/All Kindsa Worry) with Mike coming out of the drum closet to front the band and play guitar. Not long after forming Sticky, Press was hired to play drums for Rockabilly Legend Rip Carson, a gig that took him west to San Diego, where under tutelage from Carson, he began to produce his own solo records. The Alt. Countrified, Keep Your Head, scored Press a placement on Animal Planet show, Super-Fetch. He then toured opening solo shows for Los Angeles’ latin legends, Ozomatli. Keep Your Head, brought Press on tours of Ireland, Australia and Istanbul Turkey.
Update-
Almost a year to the day of starting the recording of A Lil’ Sugar A lot of Salt, Guitar phenomenon/producer Paul Nelson died while on tour. This record goes out in his memory, R.I.P Paul. Paul’s playing on this record brought Press’ music to new heights as you will hear. Listen Loud! He’s with Johnny (Winter) now!

“Listen to the lyrics of Mike Press quite carefully... What may seem like innocuous roots rock/acoustic pop, contains gems of sly wit.” - Peter Corey
